Has God revealed Himself to us?

Hollywood stars can be a significant influence on the general public… in a positive or not so positive way. Some fans hang on their every word.  One particular celebrity made some interesting comments about God.

/Content/files/2014/Thumbs/MorganFreeman-1.jpgThe person I am referring to is Morgan Freeman.  He has appeared in numerous movies including “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves”, “The Dark Knight”, “Driving Miss Daisy”, and “Invictus”.   He even played the role of God in the movie “Bruce Almighty”, which makes his personal view of God all the more interesting.

In an interview with the Huffington Post, Freeman had this to say about the existence of God:

“Well, here's a scientific question: Has anybody ever seen hard evidence? What we get is theories from our earlier prophets. Now, people who think that God invented us think that the Earth can't be more than 6,000 years old. So I guess it's a question of belief. My belief system doesn't support a creator as such, as we can call God, who created us in His/Her/Its image.”

He also said:

“So if I believe in God, and I do, it's because I think I'm God."

Earlier this year (2014) he was interviewed by the Daily Beast and stated…

“I think that God and the Devil are one. They’re not one in the same, but they’re in the same body, and it depends on which one of them surfaces… we all have God and Satan inside us… The highest power is the human mind. That’s where God came from, and my belief in God is my belief in myself.”

His beliefs may seem strange (and I believe they are, as well as sad and concerning), but they are not unique.  Many others, including celebrities, elected officials and scientists have similar distorted beliefs about God.

Volumes could be written in response to the individual statements listed above, but for this particular article, I wish to focus on just one… “Has anybody ever seen hard evidence?”

I have spoken with numerous people who have asked similar questions or made bold claims stating that there is no evidence for God.  My first question is always, “What would you accept as evidence?”  Most often the response I get is a blank stare, so I ask again.  They generally end up saying that they don’t know.  I then tell them that if they don’t know what would count as evidence and what wouldn’t, they can’t claim they haven’t seen any.  In fact, we can’t even have a discussion about it, if they have no criteria to determine what counts and what doesn’t.

Occasionally, people will say that they would believe in God if he would come down right in front of them and say, “Hey, I’m God… here I am!”  I then ask, “How would you even know that was actually God?  How would you know it wasn’t Satan posing as God, or an alien pretending to be God?  Or maybe it was a magic trick I was performing, or maybe they were temporarily delusional and just thought they were seeing something when in reality, it was nothing at all.  This still would not convince them, primarily for the same reason that a robber typically cannot find a police officer… he’s not looking for one!  The skeptic, in most instances, is not truly looking for God, but rather looking for reasons to justify the belief they already have… that God does not exist.  It also aids in justifying whatever lifestyle they might have… no God around to tell them they are wrong (or worse yet, that they are “sinning”).

As I’ve mentioned in other writings, there are no atheists.  There never have been and there never will be.  Wait a minute, how can I possibly say that?  You probably personally know at least one atheist, maybe even a number of them.  Do I say this because I have read all of the philosophy books out there and determined they are all wrong?  No.  Is it because I’ve interviewed all the supposed atheists and realized they are all wrong?  No.  It’s because I’ve read the Word of God, which tells us that God Himself has put the knowledge of Himself inside EVERY human being, so much so, that they are without excuse. (See Romans 1:19-20)  So there are no atheists on the planet.  Now, there are a number of people who have chosen to reject that knowledge… and they call themselves “atheists”.  So in that sense… there always have been atheists and always will be!

God has shown Himself in two major ways.  First (as we read in Romans 1), He has shown Himself through what He has created.  Psalms 19:1 “The heavens declare the glory of God.”  He has also shown Himself through His written Word… the Bible.  There is so much evidence for creation as well as the inspiration of the Bible, but no amount of evidence will convince a hardened skeptic, because they don’t want God to exist and have a distain for His Word.  They will also always use their own worldview to interpret whatever evidence you give them, in such a way as to attempt to further support their own worldview.  You may show them evidence of design in DNA and they might even agree about the strong case for outside intelligent intervention, but then tell you that it wasn’t God… it was aliens!

There are other ways God has revealed Himself to us, such as through His Son (Hebrews 1:1-3 & Colossians 2:9) and through the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:10).  However, it isn’t the intention of this brief article to delve into all of the actual evidences (which I do in other places), but just to point out that those who claim there is no evidence for God are simply exercising faith in their own worldview, having rejected the revelation already given to them.  It is of paramount importance that when we interact with these people, that we understand this and work hard at being a Christ-like example to them, being gracious and patient, trusting that the love of God, as shown through the Holy Spirit in our lives, will draw them to Himself.  Once they are willing to sincerely acknowledge Him, God will help them clearly see who He is more and more as they submit themselves to His authority (Hebrews 11:6).  God graciously allows us to be a part of this evangelistic process, but we need to understand how it actually works, and not be duped into believing it is a matter of “arguing” anyone into the Kingdom.

As with all of our other articles, much more could be said about this, but if you have any questions related to this month’s article or any other issue, please don’t hesitate to contact us!
