How do you tell if someone is a ‘real’ scientist?

 Consider the following exchange:

Skeptic:      Evolution is a fact! Christian:   How do you know evolution is a fact? Skeptic:      Because all the scientists believe it! Christian:   How do you know all the scientists believe it? Skeptic:      Well, all the REAL scientists believe it! Christian:   How do you define a REAL scientist? Skeptic:      Anyone who believes in evolution!

There you have it… proof of evolution! Now I’m not saying that most people would use this line of reasoning (which is actually circular reasoning), but many do. “All the real scientists believe in evolution.” Who are the real scientists? “Those who believe in evolution!” Who are those who believe in evolution? “They are the real scientists!”

Something similar occurs in another realm. Evolutionists often say that if creationists were real scientists, they would publish articles in the premiere science journals such as Science and Nature. However, when creationists do submit papers for publication, they are often rejected simply because they are creationists (and not actually on the content of the paper)! So it’s stated, “You’re not real scientists, because if you were you would be publishing in our journals.” But then when they do submit something, the response comes, “We can’t publish anything from you… you’re not a real scientist!”

In reality, most creationists do publish in mainline journals, but almost without exception, they do not include any statements that reveal their belief in creation (which would almost certainly lead to the rejection for publication). The much smaller number of creationists who are in fulltime creation research usually find it impossible to get their research published, because of their direct ties to creationist organizations. Any of you who saw the movie “Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed” will know very well how much censorship there is of anyone who dares to express doubt in evolution. Men and women have been denied promotions, have had their submissions rejected for publication, been ostracized by their colleagues and even lost their jobs because they dared to express doubt in evolution. If you have not already seen this powerful movie (which most haven’t) please consider renting it at your local video store or through an online movie service.

If belief in evolution is a requirement to be a real scientist, it’s interesting to consider a quote from Dr. Marc Kirschner, founding chair of the Department of Systems Biology at Harvard Medical School:

"In fact, over the last 100 years, almost all of biology has proceeded independent of evolution, except evolutionary biology itself. Molecular biology, biochemistry, physiology, have not taken evolution into account at all." [Boston Globe, 23 October 2005]

I recently asked a friend of mine (who is an orthopedic surgeon) how much of what he does as a doctor on a daily basis, depends on evolution being true. His reply was very simple… “Nothing.”

Another extremely important point is that most major disciplines of science were founded by Bible-believing Christians! A few examples follow:

  •
    • Genetics
    • Chemistry
    • Computer science
    • Electronics
    • Electromagnetics
    • Bacteriology
    • Fluid Mechanics
    • Oceanography
    • Paleontology
    • Physical Astronomy
    • Thermodynamics
    • Calculus

Isaac Newton (1642–1727) was arguably the greatest scientist who ever lived. He stated:

“I have a fundamental belief in the Bible as the Word of God, written by men who were inspired. I study the Bible daily.”

Peter Harrison (Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion at the University of Oxford):

“Strange as it may seem, the Bible played a positive role in the development of science. …Had it not been for the rise of the literal interpretation of the Bible and the subsequent appropriation of biblical narratives by early modern scientists, modern science may not have arisen at all. In sum, the Bible and its literal interpretation have played a vital role in the development of Western science.” [Harrison, P., The Bible and the rise of science, Australasian Science 23(3):14–15, 2002]

Science is not only compatible with the Bible… it owes its origins to Christianity! Belief in evolution, as much as they may want us to think, is not a requirement whatsoever to be a real scientist. Most science today has nothing to do with evolution (example making cell phones, faster computers, exploring new energy sources, etc.) In reality, belief in evolution can actually be a hindrance to doing “good science” (as briefly mentioned in a previous article. See: Is it crazy to “de-Nye” evolution?).

So to say someone is not a REAL scientist because of their belief in God or their rejection of evolution is nonsensical and shows the extreme bias of the person making the accusation.
