Human/Chimp DNA Similarities... Proof of Evolution?
Public school systems, universities and the media are constantly promoting evolution, often as an undeniable fact of life. We hear dogmatic statements from very intelligent scientists such as the following:
“You cannot be both sane and well educated and disbelieve in evolution. The evidence is so strong that any sane, educated person has got to believe in evolution.” [Professor Richard Dawkins - Oxford University]For a Christian student, it can be very intimidating sitting in the classroom of a teacher or professor who makes comments such as this. If they were to raise their hands and state that they don’t necessarily buy into the idea of evolution, they would be instantly branding themselves as someone who is insane and knows nothing about science or the real world.
In reality, there are many great, well thought-out, scientifically sound responses to the alleged evidences for evolution. Unfortunately, most Christians are unaware of what these responses are. They are also often intimated by science and generally wish to avoid any confrontations with those who are fairly well-versed in any scientific discipline.
One particularly difficult claim that Christians struggle in responding to is in regard to the “fact” that humans share about 98% of our DNA with chimpanzees. (Some reports state 96%, some say 99%, etc.) Evolutionists used to believe that we evolved directly from chimps or apes, but have in more recent times changed their views. They now believe that apes and humans both evolved from a common ancestor that existed somewhere between 6-10 million years ago. According to Scientific American...
“Six years ago I jumped at an opportunity to join the international team that was identifying the sequence of DNA bases, or “letters,” in the genome of the common chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes). As a biostatistician with a long-standing interest in human origins, I was eager to line up the human DNA sequence next to that of our closest living relative and take stock. A humbling truth emerged: our DNA blueprints are nearly 99 percent identical to theirs. That is, of the three billion letters that make up the human genome, only 15 million of them—less than 1 percent—have changed in the six million years or so since the human and chimp lineages diverged.” [Katherine S. Pollard, “What Makes Us Human?”, Scientific American Magazine, May 2009]Fortunately, there are some evolutionists who realize these figures are greatly inflated. According to one study, it was as low as 86%. More recent studies have pushed it down into the 70s.
For argument’s sake, let’s temporarily say that we actually are 96% similar to chimps with respect to our DNA. That leaves a 4% difference. Given that the human genome consists of 3 billion nucleotides (or “letters”), a 4% difference would still represent 120 million nucleotides (letters) that are different! This equates to the amount of information found in forty 500-page books! Evolutionists believe that changes come via mutations (i.e. accidental copying errors in our DNA). So what does this all mean? It means that you take all the complex information in the chimp DNA and start making 120 million random changes and this exercise supposedly produced a human being! Can you imagine making these types of random changes to a biochemistry book? Would you end up with an additional set of highly informational texts or would it lead to just destroying the book you started with? I think the answer is obvious. Unfortunately, our school systems want us to believe the former and tell us that it is “science”. As a further challenge, not only did these random changes create tons of new useful information, they did not singificantly mess up the original existing information!
In previous articles, we’ve briefly discussed the notion of the age of the Earth. After 26 years of studying, I just don’t see the evidence for billions of years, either biblically or scientifically. That being said, even in the evolutionists scenario of 6 millions years for human evolution from an ape-like creature, there’s not enough time (even in their own admission) to come up with the insurmountable amount of necessary “beneficial” changes in such a “short” time. This problem is commonly known as “Haldane's Dilemma”, named after evolutionary geneticist J. B. S. Haldane in 1957 (British geneticist and biologist). In their own scenario it doesn’t even make sense, but the story persists and probably will for a very, very long time.
The Bible tells us that God created man in His own image, from the dust of the Earth… not from an ape-like creature. We can always trust God’s Word and should always give it precedence when considering the temporal theories of men and women. (Psalm 118:8)
